Moving Checklist
8 weeks before
Remove unnecessary items from attic, storage, etc.
Use things you can’t move, such as frozen foods and cleaning supplies
Start a possessions inventory
Solicit estimates from two to three moving companies
Call your homeowners insurance agent to find out how your policy will cover your move
Begin collecting all moving papers and receipts in a file folder and keep in a safe location
Arrange to transfer your children’s school records
6 weeks before
Evaluate your possessions inventory: Can you donate anything? Do you need it all?
Notify your friends, relatives, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.
Locate healthcare professionals and hospitals in your new location
Complete change of address cards via the post office, or using online services, including: Banks, Charge Cards, Religious organizations, Doctor/dentist, Relatives and friends, IRS/Social Security Administration, Insurance/lawyer/accountant/stockbroker/estate attorney, Magazines, Schools Clean your closets
Hold a moving or garage sale or donate items to charities
Choose a mover or rent a truck
Contact your mover to ask about insurance
4 weeks before
Send furniture, drapes and carpets for repair/cleaning as needed
Gather auto license and registration documents, medical, dental and school records, birth certificates, wills, deeds, stock and other financial documentation
Contact gas, electric, oil, water, telephone, cable television and trash collection companies for service disconnection and connection at your old and new addresses. Also ask for final readings
Request refunds on unused homeowner’s insurance, security deposit with landlord and prepaid cable service
Notify your gardener and pool service, if applicable
Contact insurance companies (auto, homeowner’s, medical and life) to arrange for new coverage
3 weeks before
Make your travel plans, hotels if applicable
Arrange to close current bank accounts and open accounts in new locale, if necessary
Notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of your new address
Arrange for childcare on moving day
2 weeks beforeArrange for special transport for your pets and plants
Service your car(s) for the trip
Contact your moving company and review arrangements for your move
Confirm moving in process at the new home - blocking street during busy times of day
Start packing boxes if you're doing it yourself
On Moving Day
Carry enough cash or traveler’s checks to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in new city, or keep your ATM card
Transportjewelry and important documents yourself, or use registered mail
Plan for transporting of pets
Doublecheck closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty
Leave old keys, garage door openers and instruction manuals needed by new owner
Keep one moving box with toothbrushes, bedsheets, pillows and medicines properly identifed to open firs
At your new address
Obtain certified checks or cashier’s checks if necessary for closing real estate transaction
Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage
Check pilot light on stove, water heater and furnace
Ask mail delivery person for mail he/she may be holding for your arrival
Have new address recorded on driver’s license and car registration
Visit city offices and register for voting
Register children in school
Introduce yourself to new neighbors
